Volunteering

Working as a volunteer can be a stepping stone to new career opportunities.  Nottinghamshire Probation Trust is looking for enthusiastic individuals to act as mentors to men and women currently on a Community Order, as part of the REACH employability project and the Faith Based Community Mentors Scheme.

If you have the following then we’d like to hear from you:

• A basic understanding of the criminal justice system

• The ability to be non-judgemental and understanding of people in difficult situations

• The ability to be a good listener, to motivate and build trust  

• Reliability and flexibility

• A basic knowledge of services and amenities in the local area

Volunteers must be 18 years and over and initially prepared to give 2-6 hours per week towards mentoring their client.  Training and guided support in all areas of the role will be provided, as well as an opportunity to achieve an accredited OCN qualification. Expenses will be paid.

As a volunteer mentor within the REACH project, you could be supporting offenders in the following ways:

• Assisting with applications for jobs, benefits claims, college enrolments or housing
 
• Motivating offenders to attend external appointments/job interviews, training and scheduled programmes  

• Helping to build positive relationships away from peer influences

• Working with the Mentor Volunteer Co-ordinator in supervision and assessment of outcomes and aims

FAITH BASED COMMUNITY MENTORS SCHEME

Nottinghamshire Probation Trust’s Faith Group Community Mentors scheme is looking for volunteer mentors in Nottingham. The Community Mentor scheme is a new initiative offering mentoring support for offenders in partnership with faith and community groups.
 
We would encourage you to attend to hear more about the scheme, ask questions and discuss any issues.

Mentor training will start in January 2012.
