Article Title:Speak Up campaign launched to tackle adult abuse

Family, friends, neighbours and colleagues are being urged to Speak Up, and report signs of adult abuse as part of a new campaign in Nottingham.

The Speak Up initiative aims to raise public awareness around vulnerable adults who may fall victim to abuse, whether that be sexual, physical, domestic, financial, emotional, or simply neglect.

As part of the drive posters will be displayed in bus shelters, on public transport and placed in libraries and community centres, urging people to call Nottingham City Council’s Adult Contact Team on 0115 883 8460, or call the Police, to report any signs of adult abuse.

An A5 leaflet and credit card sized ‘alert cards’ have been produced, which provide key adult abuse information, and will be placed in buildings, such as police stations, hospitals and care homes.

In addition, a new website, www.mynottingham.gov.uk/adultsafeguarding, has been created, which contains information and advice about who is typically at risk, how they can be abused and various ways people with concerns can report the abuse.

The Speak Up campaign is funded by the Nottingham City Adult Safeguarding Partnership Board, which is made up of professionals from Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Police, NHS Nottingham City, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Nottinghamshire Probation Trust, Nottingham City Homes, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, other key partners, as well as care and service provider groups.

Councillor Eunice Campbell, Nottingham City Council's portfolio holder for adult services, said: "Raising awareness of abuse, and how people can take action if abuse is suspected, is one of the most important ways to protect vulnerable adults who are not always able to protect themselves.

This campaign shows the many forms abuse can take so that the public, particularly people who know someone who is vulnerable, are well-informed, have the confidence to spot when something isn't right and know what to do."

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Alexander, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Adults who fall victim to abuse, are often vulnerable or too frightened to report the abuse themselves, or unaware support is available.

"I am sure there are family, friends, carers or neighbours who have concerns that abuse or neglect has occurred but are unsure who to contact.

"I would like to assure the public that any report of adult abuse we receive either directly, or from our partners is investigated, whilst ensuring victims are supported and provided with appropriate advice."

Dee Sissons, Director of Quality and Patient Safety at NHS Nottingham City added: "We work closely with colleagues from CitiHealth NHS Nottingham, Nottingham University Hospitals and Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust to ensure all our staff are aware of the issue of adult abuse and what to do if they suspect it.

"We will use this new campaign to support that work and help raise the issue more widely."

Sheila Wright, Deputy Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire Probation Trust said: "Raising awareness of the signs of vulnerable adult abuse, and highlighting the systems in place for dealing with this issue, is absolutely vital.

"Nottinghamshire Probation Trust fully supports the new awareness campaign, and is committed to working with our partners to promote and develop an effective protection system to keep vulnerable people safe from harm."

To report an adult who maybe suffering abuse or neglect call Nottingham City Council’s Access Team on 0115 8838460, or Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 9999. or in an emergency 999.
