Nottinghamshire Probation Area held a consultation day in September 2006, which brought members of Nottingham’s diverse communities together with NPA staff and Board members. The aim of this event was to develop community engagement in the Area’s Race Equality Scheme, Disability Diversity Scheme and in the process of conducting equality impact assessments of policies and functions.

Gender Equality Scheme and Action Plan
The Sex Discrimination Act, Equality Act 2006 requires that individuals are not disadvantaged because of their marital status or gender and places a duty on public authorities to eliminate discrimination and harassment and promote equality of opportunity between men, women and transgender. The Gender Equality duty came into force in April 2007.
The Gender Recognition Act 2004 came into effect in April 2005. It gives transsexual people legal recognition in their acquired gender, subject to their successful application to the Gender Recognition Panel.
Transsexual people will be able to marry in their acquired gender when the change of gender is legally recognised.
Race Equality Scheme and Action Plan
The Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 requires that we take appropriate steps to promote equality, eliminate discrimination and promote good relations between people of different racial backgrounds. The Act makes racial discrimination by public bodies and organisations illegal and requires them to have policies to promote racial equality.
