Have you ever wondered when and how your local community centre was redecorated, or who cleared and cleaned up an area of waste ground? Chances are it may have been done by offenders supervised by Nottinghamshire Probation Area.
Here are some examples of recent projects in the local area:
Mayfield Court, The Meadows, Nottingham
Residents at Mayfield Court Sheltered Housing Scheme in the Meadows, Nottingham benefited from having their garden revamped in time to make the most of the summer sun. A group of offenders built and refurbished garden furniture, created a seating area, installed block paving, and together with residents, tidied and cleaned up the garden.
Scheme manager Sheryl Fraser is delighted with the results and said: ’The team of offenders who worked on the garden have done a superb job in transforming it from its run-down state. It’s been great to see them interacting and working with our tenants to make a positive difference and it’s clear that working to make amends to the community on this project has given the garden group a real sense of achievement.’
Keyworth Primary School, Nottingham

Offenders helped to provide a lasting memory for pupils at Keyworth Primary School when they worked on a garden designed as a tribute to a young pupil who tragically died. Working in partnership with regeneration charity Groundwork Greater Nottingham, the group worked over a number of months, putting the basic layout and structures in place, digging flowerbeds, planting, turfing and creating a bridge and central design feature. The finished garden, featuring themes of Harry Potter, sharks and Newcastle United, was then handed over to the school at an official ceremony. Headteacher of Keyworth Primary School, Chris Guest said: ’I’m keen to see offenders making amends to the community and carrying out their sentence in a practical and constructive way. This project provided the ideal opportunity to do this and it was great to get them involved.’
