Travel Expenses

A Travel and Subsistence scheme operates in order to reimburse staff for additional costs incurred due to travelling or using their own vehicle for work, rates differ depending on whether the employee is an essential or casual car user.

 Car Insurance

An optional Additional Car Insurance Scheme operates and the cost of this to the employee is either £0.92 per month or £1.72 per month. The scheme covers the loss of no claims bonus and/or excess whilst the employee’s car is parked at work or being used for National Probation Service business.

Flexible Working

Full time Probation Officers are required to work contracted hours of 150 per 4-week period (i.e. an average of 37.5 hours per week.) All other full time staff are required to work to a 37 hour week. It is implicit in these arrangements that some flexibility in working hours is expected of Probation Officer grades, but there are also circumstances where it may be beneficial to all employees to work more flexibly. The following parameters generally apply:

  • Core time (during these hours, staff are required to be at work unless on some form of authorised leave)

                                                           9.30 am - 12.00 noon

                                                           2.00 pm - 4.30 p.m.

·          Lunch break (maximum)        12.00 noon - 2.00 p.m.

Lunch breaks must be a minimum of half an hour.

The maximum debit/credit that an employee is allowed in a 4 week period is 15 hours.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

The EAP is a confidential service that may be used to help individuals or families resolve or manage any personal difficulties which may be causing concern. The EAP provides information, support and professional advice. Short term counselling and specialist advise is also available on a face to face basis.

The EAP is operated by an external organisation and the Nottinghamshire Probation Area covers the cost of up to 5 face to face counselling sessions or professional legal advice for issues of an exceptional nature up to a limit of £200 per employee.

The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, including bank holidays, and can be accessed by a free phone telephone number.

Occupational Health

The Service also has an arrangement with an external occupational health facility to advise on health and welfare issues.
