Nottinghamshire is one of 35 Probation Trusts in England and Wales which together form part of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), an agency of the Ministry of Justice.
We work with offenders throughout Nottinghamshire from our offices in Nottingham, Newark, Worksop and Mansfield and in courts and prisons. Four Probation local delivery units (LDUs) are each led by a Director and cover the geographical areas of Mansfield and Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood, Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling (South Notts) and Nottingham City.
Our remit is to protect the public and reduce reoffending through the effective management of offenders who have either been sentenced to a Community Order or are on a licence from prison. This includes:
-
Provision of pre-sentence reports to help judges and magistrates in their task of sentencing offenders in Nottinghamshire's courts.
-
Supervision and management of offenders through community orders imposed by the courts, ensuring the sentence of the court is carried out in ways which reduce the risk the offender poses to the community.
-
Running Community Payback - a scheme requiring offenders to work a set number of unpaid hours for the benefit of the community,
-
Provision of accredited programmes aimed at changing attitudes, thinking and behaviour - tackling issues such as domestic violence and drink impaired driving.
-
Developing offender's basic skills and literacy to increase opportunities for future employment
-
Working with prisoners, preparing them for release and supervising them while they are on licence in the community.
-
Working in partnership with other agencies to manage Nottinghamshire’s Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements or MAPPA. The MAPPA ensure that information about the relatively small number of individuals who pose the highest risk of causing harm to others is shared and actions are closely co-ordinated between criminal justice and other agencies , such as housing, education, training and employment and child protection.
-
Managing a residential facility known as an approved premises, (sometimes known as a 'probation hostel'). Offenders or those on bail living at an approved premises must abide by a strict set of rules. The length of stay may range from a few weeks to several months.
-
Working with the victims of serious violent crime. Our victim liaison service enables victims and their families to gain information about the progress of the offender's sentence and to comment on the offender's release plan from prison. These comments are included in the information considered by the Parole Board, in assessing the suitability of the offender for release.
