You voted - we listened!
Offenders will give Basford's Mill Street playing fields a new lease of life after Nottingham's public made it their number one choice in a campaign which asked local people to nominate the work offenders do to pay back in their communities.
The three week public vote ran during April through the directgov website as part of the "Justice Seen, Justice Done" campaign to raise awareness of Community Payback as a tough punishment for criminals. This follows the launch of branded high visibility orange jackets that offenders must now wear.
The Mill Street site was put forward for the public vote as local people felt this scenic area was in need of some care and attention. It will now benefit from offenders working to:
- redefine pathways
- pick litter
- cut back hedges
- clear an old mill stream and
- create a garden area
The big revamp is already underway, with land on both sides of the entrance pathway off Mill street cleared including an area within the ruins of the mill itself. The overgrown pathway leading to the play park has also been cleared. Work is being carried out in partnership with Nottingham City Council's NEAT team.
The other sites which were put forward for the public vote, which ran during April – Forest Recreation Ground, Broxtowe Country Park, Meadows Area and St Ann’s, will also be overhauled over the coming year as part of the Justice Seen Justice Done campaign.
It’s not just the City that can benefit from this scheme – why not contact Nottinghamshire Probation Area’s Community Payback team to find out about the type of work that has been done in the City and County; or put forward a suggestion for your area?
